65 Barpa Langais Barpa Langais is the best preserved and largest of the Neolithic, chambered, burial cairns on North Uist. Its massive size suggests, according to Erskine Beveridge, that it was the burial place of some great chief and intended as both a tomb and a monument. Its prominent outline and siting, midway up Beinn Langais, is remarkable for the labour which must have been involved in carrying from a great distance and placing so many large stones into its pyramid shape. it is now too dangerous to enter because of the collapsed stonework. Beveridge found remnants of of burnt burials and fragments of Bronze Age urn pottery within the first chamber and he suggested that two further chambers may well lie beyond the entrance to the east. ‘S e an càrn-tiodhlacaidh le sèomraichean as motha agus as fhèarr air an glèidheadh bho Linn Nuadh na Cloiche ann an Uibhist a Tuath a th’ ann am Barpa Langais. Tha e cho mòr ‘s gun robh Erskine Beveridge de ‘n bheachd gun robh àrd-uachdran ainmeal air a thiodhlacadh ann is gur e an dà chuid carragh-cuimhne agus uaigh a bh’ ann. Tha e air a shuidheachadh lethach suas Beinn Langais agus iongantach airson an obair a chuireadh ann le bhi giulainn leithid a chlachan mòra air astar, a bharrachd air an obair clachaireachd a chaidh do thogalach dhan chruth seo. Fhuair Beveridge criomagan loisgte air fhàgail bho thiodhlacan agus sgealban de phoitean bho Linn an Umha anns a’ chiad sèomar. Bha e de ‘n bheachd gu robh dà shèomar eile na b’ fhaide a-staigh ris an taobh an Ear. Tha e nis ro chunnartach a dhol na bhroinn leis gu bheil e a’ falbh às a chèile. Pobull Fhinn is the most conspicuous Megalithic stone circle on North Uist and, lying on a plateau, is situated an easy walk away from Barpa Langais, overlooking the sea. (It is interesting to speculate on the type of social relationships that might have existed between the two sites.) The stones of Pobull Fhinn are shaped in an oval rather than a circle, their east-west axis being slightly longer than that to the north-south. The purposes of such circles are still open to considerable debate - were they placed to plot the celestial movements of the sun, the seasonal cycles or those of the dark, the moon and the stars? For what community celebrations or rituals might these huge stones have been hewn and dragged so high up to denote? Certainly they represent considerable effort and confidence on the part of the early Neolithic farming communities who erected them. ‘S e na tursaichean as fhollaisaiche bho Meadhan Linn na Cloiche ann an Uibhist a Tuath a th’ ann am Poball Fhinn. Tha iad air talamh còmhnard, àrd faisg air Barpa Langais a’ coimhead a-mach air a mhuir. Saoil dè an ceangal a tha eadar an dà àite? Tha iad air an cur suas ann an cruth uighe an àite cruth cruinne. Chan eil sinn cìnnteach fhathast carson a bha iad air an togail, an ann a leantainn na grèine a bha iad no na ràithean, a gheallach no na reultan? Saoil dè an t-adhbhar a bh’ aig na daoine na clachan seo a shnaith agus an tarraing gu àite cho àrd? Tha na tursaichean seo a’ sealltainn dhuinn cho innleachdach agus misneachail ‘s a bha na tuathanaich seo bho Linn Nuadh na Cloiche. 123 Sketch of Tigh Cloiche chambered cairn Chambered cairns are my favourite pre-historic structures and we are lucky to have so many of them on Uist. Sketching the cairns (or what's left of them) makes me take more notice of the details and gives me a closer connection to them and their place in the landscape. -Janet Dix Still Image Friday 05th of August 2022 02:31:59 PM Friday 05th of August 2022 02:31:59 PM

131 Old gravestone I found this interesting and a puzzle to solve as graveyards across the world are. I am pleased to say that I believe I have an answer. The stone marks the resting place of Alexander Cameron who died in Barra on 16 July 1868 aged 51. His grandparents lived in North Uist and his parents moved to Barra where some of his family still live. Alex was unmarried but his brother Malcolm took over the Croft. I believe another brother John lived in Benbecula. Although short, I found the walk enjoyable and it was great to hear people adding to the detail provided by our guide. 134 Inside the MacVicar temple I felt sad that I didn’t understand more of the language as I had been exposed to the language as a child when on vacation or listening to my mother talking to her sisters. I really enjoyed hearing the words and the sound of Archie’s voice. He has a lovely speaking voice. I would have liked the walk to have been longer so I was one of the people who continued walking. 138 Ann Wells' article My mother wrote a piece for it in the year 2000 about her experience of living and working as a teacher-trainer in India after leaving Paible School - where she both studied and later taught. Unusually, she wrote it in Gaelic, a language she normally reserved for spoken relations with Uist family and friends. Perhaps she wanted to lay down a more permanent marker in the best way she knew how? YouTube was still some way off! -Gordon Wells Still Image Friday 05th of August 2022 05:29:54 PM Friday 05th of August 2022 05:35:10 PM
139 Class photo at Bayhead School in 1924 We all have stories and memories, including memories of people who had stories and memories, including memories of people who had stories and memories, and so on... To be aware of, or to be reminded of, those quickly diversifying links (like a "family tree") helps me build my own narrative of where and who I've come from, and come to a rooted understanding of the myriad influences that have shaped that journey. -Gordon Wells Still Image Friday 05th of August 2022 05:32:00 PM Friday 05th of August 2022 05:32:00 PM
140 Ann Wells as a teacher in India The story of a rooted Hebridean family with close connections around the globe, through Australia, Canada, China, Singapore and elsewhere, as well as India (if we were also to go through the histories of Ann’s eight brothers and sisters…) is probably one that many other Hebridean family albums could tell just as well. When it comes to reflection on the links between heritage and wellbeing, and the value of transcending imagined boundaries, bilingual Island Voices may offer special insights! -Gordon Wells (https://guthan.wordpress.com/2022/05/10/island-voices-aire-air-sunnd/) Still Image Friday 05th of August 2022 05:34:17 PM Friday 05th of August 2022 05:34:17 PM

225 Photo of Paddle Steamer SS “Lovedale” This photograph of the Paddle Steamer SS “Lovedale” which was the Stornoway Mail Steamer sailing from Stromeferry to Stornoway before the railway line was extended to Kyle of Lochalsh and the service then operated to and from Kyle. I am not sure if it is copyright of not as I saw it on the internet. This photograph was taken at Lochmaddy Pier many years ago. In it you can see the cargo shed made of corrugated iron painted in a light colour, you can clearly see the window in the gable end wall that was fitted with a red pane of glass, which a paraffin lamp was placed inside it in the dark when a ship was approached to let the Captain see the dangers of the rocks at the inside of the pier. On the outside of the pier, the berthing face, had two anchor paraffin lamps to let the Captain see the line of the berthing face. Before the shed was finally demolished around 1950 it was painted green at that time. Still Image Wednesday 14th of September 2022 04:36:16 PM Wednesday 14th of September 2022 04:36:16 PM

265 Balranald Nature Reserve Balranald Nature Reserve is a wildlife-rich coastal grassland in the West of North Uist. This nature reserve is of great ecological importance as it is composed of sandy beaches, a rocky foreshore, wild marshes and sculpted sand dunes, whilst being a prime machair location. Machair is a rare soil that supports an outstanding variety of wildlife, while regulating the climate through climate sequestration. Machair is also essential for the traditional agricultural processes in North Uist on which the isle's economy depends on. Over 90% of the world's machair is in Scotland and Ireland.
